YOUR PRICING OPTIONS

Windy City Flyers' Price List includes two different hourly rates for aircraft rental. The time and charges for Full Club Members is calculated by using the aircraft's tach meter ("TACH RATES"). The rates for all others are calculated by using the aircraft's hobbs meter. The tach will always total less than the hobbs meter for any given flight.

A hobbs meter measures how long the engine has been running - regardless of the speed at which it has been running. The tach meter measures the number of revolutions the propeller makes per minute. The tach is equal to the hobbs only when the engine is running at full speed. The engine will be operating at low power settings during every flight: taxiing for departure, while waiting for takeoff, while on approach for landing and during the taxi back to parking. A tremendous amount of time while training is spent at low power settings including traffic pattern work (takeoff and landing practice), slow flight and stalls. Overall, the average savings from tach vs hobbs time is between 70% - 80%.

Using tach rates, our Club Members save substantially! For example, during a one-hour flight in our Cessna 172N the Hobbs meter will turn over by 1. However, in the same one-hour flight, the tach meter might only turn over 0.7. If you were paying the hobbs rate, your flight would cost $86.00, but by the tach rate that same flight would only cost $67.20. In either case, a pilot logs the full hour in his/her logbook. Over time, Full Club Members can save thousands of dollars each year!

Student pilots may choose whether or not to become a Full Member. Students who fly as a Full Club Member must pay a one-time membership fee of $695, but will not be charged monthly dues until after they have earned their Private Pilot License. Student Members immediately benefit from savings realized through tach rates. Those that choose not to pay the membership fee must pay hobbs rates and are charged by the hobbs hour.

Instructor rates are the same whether a full member or not. Regardless of membership status, we offer all students the highest quality in flight instruction!
